Hugo Burge

May 12th 2023

We are deeply saddened to have learned of the passing of Hugo Burge.

Hugo was an incredibly kind man, generous of spirit and with his time, exceedingly modest, accommodating, affable and interested. But above all what shone through most was his passion and commitment to creative practice and especially heritage crafts. His vision took Marchmont through an eight year renovation to become, in his words, ''a sanctuary of creativity'' championing crafts in danger of being lost, and re-energising them through his support and commitment, including studios, workshops, residencies and the makers foundation. This project required Hugo’s steady, unique vision, quiet determination and generous nature.

We have been so fortunate to have worked with Hugo over the years through Marchmont Creative Spaces with residency opportunities for VAS members, and a hugely memorable Conversations In Wood weekend event. We are so grateful for that.

Hugo leaves an incredible legacy, reaching so many creatives in his dedication and passion for art and crafts across Scotland and beyond.

Our heartfelt condolences go to Hugo’s family, friends and all at Marchmont House as well as the wider creative community in Scotland and all who knew and worked with him.

Rest in peace, dear Hugo.
