Ross

Location: Linlithgow

Materials: Oil, Watercolour
Victoria Ross is a self taught, visual artist who makes pared back, expressive paintings and drawings. She paints people as she experiences them – as fragile, full of gaps and with broken edges. Her work navigates the boundary between portrait and figure Working predominantly from old family photographs, with a muted palette of watercolours and oils, she creates delicate, ethereal portraits by constantly setting herself creative problems that no one else has asked her to solve. is it possible to use oils on raw canvas? Is it still a painting if most of the canvas is bare? How few marks are needed to express deep emotion? Her art is an ongoing conversation between her inner yearning and the world’s refusal to stop turning. It is an embodied attempt to accept the passage of time by gently acknowledging those who have gone ahead of her and to cherish her own, small life. Victoria’s art is a quiet invitation to her fellow humans to think less and feel more. To be curious about the vulnerability of being mortal. And to relish their own brief moment in the sun.
