Julia

Laing

As a visual artist my practice encompasses both fine art and craft. Initially I trained as a painter at Edinburgh College of Art, before shifting attention to working primarily with reclaimed textiles. I have over 20 years’ experience as a designer/maker, however recently my focus has returned to painting. My work is often developed using layering techniques, which mirrors my perspective that life consists of many distinct, and often contradictory elements, that when combined, seamlessly fuse together to create a cohesive and interconnected whole. I’m drawn to tactile surfaces, bold colour, dark humour, contrasts, ambiguity, imperfection, and happy accidents. Additionally, I’m fascinated by the idea of time passing, and the histories of people, places, and objects.
