Butler-Cole Aiken

Disciplines: Glass

Location: Selkirk

Materials: Pastel, Pencil, Watercolour, Glass
Emma is a stained/architectural glass artist and visual artist working in the Scottish Borders. Born in London in 1966, she grew up in the Scottish Borders, moving to Edinburgh in the 1980s to attend Edinburgh College of Art. Here she specialised in Stained Glass under the tuition of Douglas Hogg. After graduating she worked part-time for Edinburgh Stained Glass House during which time she gained commissions in her own right. She established her own stained glass studio in Edinburgh in 1994 and moved to Selkirk in 2016. Returning to a landscape of hills, fields and trees refreshed her creative process. Seeking magical combinations of image and material, she strives to reach beyond the ordinary to create unique works which stand the test of time. Discerning when to allow glass colours to shine out unhindered and when to bring control and distinction is a continuous process, the choices of possible outcomes almost overwhelming. Within this creative process her faith and light emerge. Emma became an Associate of the British Society of Master Glass Painters in 2002 and her Dove rose window in Broxburn Parish Church gained a Commendation from the Saltire Society in 2011. In 2018 She made The Tree of Jesse window for Glasgow Cathedral. Emma is married with two grown up children and two grandchildren.
