Alexandra

Bell

Disciplines: Digital

Location: Dunbar

Alex Bell is multimedia artist, focussing on digital, light and sonic arts. Her work incorporates sound, music, moving image, sculpture, writing and performance to create immersive experiences which challenge perceptions and stimulate empathy for the counterargument. She is concerned with 21st century “mauvais foi” (bad faith, Sartre), where we evade the responsibility of discovering and understanding ourselves and the consequences of our actions, failing to exercise integrity and autonomy in life choices. Her practice explores intersections between culture, arts, technology and science to confront entrenched ideologies and beliefs. Originally from Belfast, Alex has lived, worked and expeditioned on all continents, often in remote cultures and landscapes, before setting up her studio overlooking the sea in East Lothian.

Previous Experience

Graduating as a mature student from The Glasgow School of Art in 2023 (B.Des. Hons (1st Class, Chairman’s Medal), Alex is also a trained classical musician and chartered engineer. Recent moving image and installation work has been shown at the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh, the Ulster Museum in Belfast and Westchester University in Philadelphia. Recent sound works were broadcast in Resonance Festival London and Radiophrenia Art Radio Festival in Glasgow. Residencies include Isle of Skye (WASPS), Scalloway (Shetland Arts) and Flam (Nobel).
