My mother taught me to make things; to knit, to sew, in the way she’d been taught by her mother...so my early view of craft was that it was something everyday and practical. I applied to art school in my mid-30s, inspired by the ‘new’ Glasgow Boys (and Girls) and German Expressionist painters and printmakers like Käthe Kollwitz. I was redirected from Fine Art/ Painting to Ceramics.
After a break from full-time practice of almost 20 years, I have returned to making, aiming to stretch myself technically and creatively. Despite gaps of many years from making, I’ve always found returning to working with clay is like an instinct; it comes back quickly.
I started by going back to what I know, larger-scale vessel forms. I realised I have been so focused on my Gaelic roots that I omitted to explore how my home of the last 40-odd years fits into my idea of 'belonging’. As a starting point, my forms are still heavily influenced by my crofting heritage (my core) but my surfaces will take inspiration from my drawings and photographs of the farming area around my Ayrshire home. I've recently been combining my drawings and photography, using Photoshop to create repeat patterns, aiming to create a new body of work incorporating the vessel form, ceramic transfers, and new glazes.
For me, Craft is the keeper of tradition and the subverter of tradition; I find endless fascination in its ‘shapeshifting’ between design, making objects, and making art.
I am returning (for a second time!) to my ceramics practice, combining this with a long-standing commitment to supporting the role of arts and culture in effecting transformational change.
