  • Biography
Born, and now lives in Kirkliston, just outside Edinburgh. With encouragement from a drawing tutor Jean successfully applied for a BA (Hons) in Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art. After gaining her degree she was accepted at Wimbledon School of Art, for a Postgraduate Diploma in Drawing; at this time she also won a scholarship for a year-long residency with ArtSpace Portsmouth. Gaining her Postgraduate she set off travelling, culminating in teaching Art & Design in Shanghai and staying in China to live, work and travel for three years.
Her work whether abstract or figurative responds to the drama of human experience. Stylistically she combines the immediacy of drawing from life or from particular places which have resonance for her, with direct and expressive mark making. Paintings often start from exploratory marks in response to subject matter, from which she extracts a narrative that is both intuitive and meaningful. Recent subject matter is figurative and deals with ideas surrounding wish fulfilment. Her influences range from Icarus to the Magic Realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Jean recently went to Italy to learn new printmaking techniques where colour is key to the design and which, along with new paintings, she is hoping to develop further at Glasgow Printmakers.
Her work is now in private collections in Vienna, Norway, London and around Scotland.
