Frances Ross works with porcelain and fireable materials to create sculpture and work that crosses the boundary between art and function. Her practice is research and process based, and she is responds to ideas including causal agents, especially those we can’t see and on an extreme scale, such as gravity, thunder, magnets, tides and gods.
Following a BA in Fine Art (2000) from Middlesex University, Ross spent 20 years working in the commercial world, including construction, engineering, shipping and food manufacturing. Returning to art with broad expertise in materials and processes, she received her Masters in Glass & Ceramics from University of Sunderland in 2021.
Ross has participated in group shows REVERB (Edinburgh, 2023), West (Glasgow, 2023) and Under One Roof (Glasgow, 2024). Her work was selected for the FRAMEWORK exhibition at Dundee Design Festival (2024). In 2023, the Woodland Trust commissioned Ross to create two permanent public sculptures. As part of artist group ROAM West (2023-25), she participated in public engagement and site specific exhibitions.
Ross devised a collaborative participatory making and installation project, FLOCK, for Upland Arts Development, and is delivering it to schools 2024-2026. She is in an ongoing collaboration with maker in wood, Rachel Ashcroft. Ross lives and works in Galloway, south west Scotland.
