The Paper Factor Edinburgh, 25th-28th September: Edge of Matter, is a dynamic new exhibition and collaboration between Visual Arts Scotland and Hidden Door, showcasing the work of 38 emerging artists, with thought provoking and inspirational work of storytelling, loss, identity and the exploration between the poetic and the humorous.
This landmark exhibition brings together a fresh wave of creative voices whose work speaks to both personal and collective experience. From deeply moving reflections on memory and absence to sharp and playful interpretations of modern life, Edge of Matter offers a broad and compelling look at the next generation of artistic talent.
The collaboration between Visual Arts Scotland and Hidden Door grew out of a recognition that the creative sector needs to work more collegiality to support artists, particularly those at the start of their careers, in order to safeguard the future of creative talent in Scotland.
VAS President Tavienne Bridgwater says, ‘This exhibition is about more than showcasing work, it is about recognising the breadth of talent and affirming our commitment to support and nurture it, and to offer a platform where emerging artists can be seen, supported and encouraged to take creative risks. We want to shine a light on this talent to ensure it thrives.’
Edge of matter invites audiences to engage with art that resonates emotionally, intellectually, breaking traditional boundaries and embracing experimentations in form, medium and message.

About Hidden Door’s Artist Development Programme
Hidden Door’s Artist Development Programme exists to support the next generation of creative talent in Scotland. We know that ambitious, boundary-pushing work often struggles to find a place within traditional gallery or venue structures, so our programme creates the space and support for artists to take risks and grow. We work with emerging and early-career creatives across visual art, performance, music, and interdisciplinary practice, providing mentoring, professional development, and opportunities to present new work to audiences. Our focus is on nurturing bold ideas, amplifying underrepresented voices, and fostering collaboration across disciplines. By investing in artists at a crucial stage in their journey, we aim to build confidence, strengthen networks, and help establish sustainable creative careers. Ultimately, the programme is about shaping a more vibrant, diverse, and innovative cultural landscape in Scotland: one where artists have the freedom and support to thrive.
Hidden Door’s Artist Development Programme is free and simple to join by signing up to our newsletter, giving artists easy access to opportunities, support, and community.

Hidden Door is collaborating with Visual Arts Scotland to co-curate and produce the exhibition, bringing our experience of transforming unusual spaces into platforms for bold, ambitious work. Together, we are creating an opportunity for emerging artists to showcase large-scale, experimental pieces that rarely find a place in traditional gallery settings.
