Working with a diverse range of materials in my practice helps me find interesting visual contrasts or similarities, such as the fragility of organic matter against the structural solidness of metal and wire. The process of creating these works has been both experimental and unpredictable, with the inherent constraints of each material shaping the outcome. In my most recent body of work (Mycophones), through research into bio-design techniques I have developed special processes to grow my own sculptures from mycelium (fungi roots) which has shown me a promising future where living processes inform form and structure. This approach suggests a sustainable outlook where organic materials are the norm, not only for artistic purposes but in everyday life. In this way we can interact and collaborate with natural organisms in ways that are mutually beneficial rather than exploitative.
