Siobhan

Morison

As an artist, I’m drawn to working in different mediums, although stone is my main focus and first love. Using direct carving, the beginning of the sculpture emerges in a visually chaotic manner, but then sculpting becomes almost meditative, and a dialogue happens with the stone and I become totally absorbed. I’m completely captivated by my current theme (birds); one that I feel chose me rather than any decision on my part. Each sculpture, drawing, or sketch teaches me more about the subject of birds, and this learning through exploration and making, I find endlessly fascinating. I use drawing and painting as a method of research for my sculpture Not based on anything concrete but more an abstraction derived from close observation of nature, my stone sculptures are a celebration of movement, nature, and flow. Crafted entirely by hand using traditional tools. Each piece is designed to evoke a sense of touch and connection, beckoning viewers to reach out and feel the smooth and textured surfaces. Through the organic shapes and fluid lines, I aim to capture the essence of nature’s dynamic beauty and the perpetual motion that surrounds us. This immersion in nature, paying attention to how the natural world behaves and where our place is as part of it, has become progressively more important to me in my life not just my practice. Nature inspires me greatly which is why I’m concerned about the environment and how we can use it sustainably.
