Sarmed Mirza is a Glasgow-based, award-winning multidisciplinary artist, educator, writer and BAFTA Scotland New Talent-nominated filmmaker. Born in Pakistan and living in Scotland for over twenty-five years, he explores memory, migration, identity and the relationship between inner and outer landscapes. Working across drawing, painting, photography and film, his practice moves between detailed graphite portraits, miniature oil paintings and expressive abstraction. Observation, meditation and lived experience inform his work, with years of Vipassana practice shaping an approach grounded in sustained attention and inquiry. Scale plays a central role. His Monument Valley paintings bring vast landscapes into an intimate, handheld format, revealing unexpected forms through close looking. ReGenesis assembles miniature impasto paintings into larger visual fields, exploring emergence, transformation and imagined ecologies. Its 204-painting work, Emergence, was longlisted for The Artist Prize in 2026. Across these projects, familiar images become openings for uncertainty and discovery. Viewers are invited to slow down, move between detail and whole, and reconsider what they believe they already know. Alongside his studio practice, Sarmed teaches drawing and painting through workshops and courses, helping people strengthen their observational skills, build confidence and sustain a creative practice. His work brings artistic development and human attention into conversation, treating making as a way to understand both the world and our place within it.
