Sarmed Mirza is a Glasgow-based multidisciplinary award winning artist, educator, writer and BAFTA New Talent-nominated filmmaker. Born in Pakistan and living in Scotland for over twenty-five years, his work explores memory, migration, identity, attention and the relationship between inner and outer landscapes. Working across drawing, painting, photography and film, Sarmed is known for highly detailed graphite portraits, miniature oil paintings and abstract works inspired by observation, meditation and lived experience. His practice is informed by years of Vipassana meditation, through which drawing and painting become acts of sustained attention and inquiry. Sarmed Mirza has exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Scottish Portrait Awards, the Scottish Prize for Fine Art, the Paisley Art Institute Annual Exhibitions, Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. In 2025 he received the Art REQ Ltd Award at the 136th Paisley Art Institute Annual Exhibition and was selected for the second stage of the John Moores Painting Prize. His ongoing projects include the Monument Valley miniature painting series, the Handshake series exploring conflict and reconciliation, and ReGenesis, a large-scale work examining transformation, renewal and humanity’s relationship with the natural world. Alongside his studio practice, Sarmed teaches drawing and painting through workshops and courses, helping people develop both artistic skills and deeper observation.
