Roderick

McKenzie

I am a self-taught photographer based in Ross-shire, Scotland. I tend use photography to respond to personal experience but also significant events. I take inspiration where I find it, other artists, music, film and poetry. I mostly work to produce a series of photographs but equally happy to settle on a single image. I have a heavy monochrome bias and I tend to make photographs in the tradition of Independent Photography, so work characterised by a strong leaning towards individualism. I have always been drawn to abstraction and minimalism and in this my own practice concentrates on three aspects: how small in physical size or content an image can be and still hold a narrative, how close one can get to the abstract and still recognise the subject and, how we make sense of the abstract. I work mostly with digital cameras but I am also working on analogue based projects (polaroids, large format film) and have recently started to produce photogravures.
