I am a Scottish contemporary painter and collage artist based in Queensferry, working from a studio overlooking the Forth Estuary. My practice explores the shifting light, weather, geology and memory of the Forth landscape through painting, collage, monotype and layered acrylic on paper. Long-term observation of the shoreline, tides, changing weather and the distinctive structures of the Forth Bridges provides a starting point, but the work increasingly moves away from direct representation towards abstraction. I am interested in the tension between what is observed and what is remembered: how landscape can be fragmented, reassembled and transformed through material, colour and surface. Collage and the layering of translucent paint allow fragments of imagery and paper to remain visible, creating works that sit between landscape and abstraction. Recent work has also been informed by encounters with Japanese art, materials and landscape, particularly the qualities of handmade paper, restraint and the relationship between surface and space.
