Nigel Reid-Foster is a ceramic artist based in Kilcreggan on the west coast of Scotland, working under the name Valtos Studio. His practice is shaped by a deep engagement with the sea and coastal landscape, where light, salt, wind and water continually transform surface and colour. Turquoise, sea-green and soft blue glazes move across pale sand and chalk-white ceramic bodies, evoking tidal shallows, weathered stone and maritime horizons. Largely self-taught, Reid-Foster brings a strong craft-based approach informed by an early career in theatrical design, construction and photography. His work is research-led and process-driven, drawing on historically informed firing techniques including pit, barrel and sagger firing. Fire, smoke and atmosphere are treated as collaborators, introducing variation and unpredictability that mirror natural coastal processes. Influenced by Celtic and Pictish forms, his ceramic vessels balance restraint with elemental energy, creating tactile, individual works that connect ancient process with contemporary ceramic practice.
