Nicky
Riding
Nicky blends in-depth research, physical symbolic performative mark marking and experimentation to create multi-dimensional installations with sculpture, paint, photography and acrylic, creating narratives in the context of Artivism – art that effects change. The process is iterative. As a neurodiverse artist Nicky uses her creative voice to develop narratives that speak to who she is, what she sees and what Nicky wants to represent, by exploring themes on Feminism/Misogyny, Menopause/Midlife and an Exploration of Self. In doing so the process of creating is as important as the end result with in-depth research and development of each theme. All work is approached with a duty of care, love, mischievousness and provocation, using a wide range of mixed media. The written word is also an important part of Nicky’s art practice; her aspiration is to make a positive contribution to Feminist Art History with her ongoing research and writing in the field of Age Studies in relation to the Representation of Midlife Women and Menopause in Art and Culture. In 2020 Nicky embraced a career change, completing a Foundation Course in Art and Design at Leith School of Art, Edinburgh and was bitten by the bug! Nicky’s artistic adventure continued at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD), Dundee University where she graduated with a BA (Honours) First-Class in Fine Art, 2025. Nicky’s artistic practice continues to evolve today with written and practical research as a PhD Candidate and student at DJCAD.
