Madeleine Marg is an interdisciplinary artist from Scotland. At the centre of her current practice lies the house, a soft underbelly where hidden life circulates behind 4 walls. Growing up in the Scottish Highlands, she felt her home was woven into the landscape. Rain protruded onto all windows, silence was expansive, and the connection between self and land felt inseparable. Through her new body of work, she reflects on her personal experience of moving to the bustling city. She states,”As I am plucked from the earth, my tree still grows just in a different way than before.” To her, nature within the city feels like a simulation, contained and curated. Within her practice, she disrupts the original function of everyday objects, altering their connotations. The organic becomes petrified, flowers weep for empathy, and a coffee table grows human feet. The theme of the artificial is perpetuated throughout her work as she questions what remains of human connection to the land and to each other.
