I am a visual artist working in textile and stitch. My career as a costume interpreter led me to be curious and inventive. I use any combination of fabric, paper, ink, paints and dye and will print, stitch, dye, grate, burn, distress, tear – even bury- to get the effects I want. I mark make with both machine and hand stitching. I love the experimental aspect of my medium, the organic evolution of my work. How far can I take this? What happens if I do this? It’s the creative language I know intimately and I love it because it’s still so difficult. It challenges me all the time, and I find this both fascinating and exciting, and it drives my practice forward. My art is primarily nature led. I am deeply committed to the land and the duality of its permanence and fragility. I strive in my work to reflect both that delicacy and strength, as well as the beauty of colour, texture and line. I am inspired by both a sense of place, and the ‘melancholy transience’ of nature and the ancient memories held within the land, as well as the distant echoes of those who inhabited it before us.
