Sipe

Libby Sipe is a multidisciplinary artist primarily working in painting, both traditionally and as a sculptural medium. Her work explores the inner drama of the emotional spectrum through colour and texture, utilising bold and highly pigmented paints to capture the theatrical stories that unfold in the mind as she experiences the world around her. Sipe draws inspiration from her memories, the British landscape, and lived experiences as an individual healing from complex trauma, poverty, and anxiety. Sipe’s particular interests lie in the imperfections that persist in every landscape. Pulling to the foreground stories that are often overlooked. Her work employs a diverse palette of oils, acrylic mediums, and paint skins to create bold textured mindscapes where pigment and form capture fleeting emotional bursts. Painted intuitively, each piece explores the tension between lived experiences and anxiety. Raw feelings of love, loss, fear, humour and tragedy transform into a physical statement on the canvas. The artist is drawn to the stark contrast between a perfectly saturated blemish-free background and a chaotic messy foreground of colour. This duality highlights the strain of her subject and her struggle with perfectionism. Ultimately, this visual contrast reveals the inner conflict of maintaining a smooth controlled exterior while yearning to break free.
