My work explores rituals of memory focused around the paper-making town of Penicuik, a landscape which is deeply rooted in my personal history. Through the development of physical artefacts, I consider how a deeper connection with the landscape can ground our sense of place within the wider world. My process begins in the landscape where I use my bodily senses to explore and gain an embodied sense of place through mark making and sketch books. Alongside these, I capture photographic studies of the life cycle of the natural world and man-made structures within it. Paper, clay, copper, eggshell and colour pigment, are all earth-bound materials carrying their own narratives and tied to my experience of this special landscape. Through essential processes, the materials share their life cycle, bearing the evidence of interaction, celebrating imperfection, and honouring the passing of time. Vitreous enamel is at the core of my studio practice, expressing my connection to the landscape in pattern, texture, and colour. By embracing an experimental approach, ‘trusting the process’ and leaning into the serendipity of enamelling, my pieces reflect a ‘letting go’ of control and the necessity to always search for perfection. The result is a series of Memory Vessels which can be held in the hand, providing a focus for reflection and remembering. After completing a degree in Jewellery and Metal Design in 2025, my work received several awards and has been exhibited throughout the UK and abroad.
