“…a dash of curiosity is all it takes to stumble upon treasures never expected.” Sabahattin Ali. Karen Browns art practice seeks to capture the ethereal through her engagement with Constructivism and the British Constructivist Marlow Moss (1889-1958). It is a deep reflection of both personal history and artistic exploration bringing together multiple threads of her research and lived experience. Her work explores the fragmented form and disrupted line, tracing the play of shadow, reflection and refraction, while investigating negative space alongside the dynamics of single and double lines . Through this she initiated a dialogue between light and line, uncovering the aesthetic emotion that emerges from movement , illumination and space. Drawing on her own family’s matrilineal heritage- daughter, grandmother and great grandmother and supported by a lifetime of inherited diaries, she reveals through shared spaces and shadows the extraordinary within the ordinary . Her work includes 2D paintings in gouache and acrylic allowing her to express light delicately, creating highly nuanced pieces and 3D Perspex sculptural and installation pieces collaborating closely with local tradespeople to realise her vision. Her collage work focuses on the concept of white on white. She is an Edinburgh based artist with a nursing background in palliative care.
