Disciplines: Printmaking

Location: Edinburgh

Materials: Carving, Darkroom, Objects, Paper, Relief Print, Slip Casting, Woodcut
Working across disciplines from printmaking to photography, and materials such as clay and salt, Kam (she/her) is ‘within’ an ongoing battle to understand “what does it mean to belong in something?” To try and expose the in-between and ‘just’ happening spaces that are often overlooked or missed. My Art is Dead comes from the idea that art (as a verb) is mourning; between being created (thus alive) and being completed (thus dead). As artists we are between remembering and forgetting. She wants to celebrate the mundane pauses that happen in this space and allow for conversation to happen between our thoughts, material, process and place. In a constant dialogue with the method and the material, she feels she is not the sole ‘author’ of my work and the reason for the work is as a British Born Chinese, she has never fully felt whole. Neither belonging to her heritage or been ‘back home’, she feels a failure at both (but that’s okay). Trying to remember the feeling of something lost yet at the same time trying to forget in order to progress and move forward. My art tries to accept this expression and instead offer us time and/or space to appreciate the process between the two feelings. Whether this is leaving traces and/or playing with words with their multi/translatable meanings. Often the work is fragile and at risk of disappearing as much as they have appeared, out of our capability to see it.
