Hanlon

I am a Polish-born multidisciplinary artist leaving and working in Scotland, and a recent Master of Fine Art graduate from the Glasgow School of Art. My installations frequently combine printing, textiles, sculptural and metal works, photography, audio-visual works or writing. I focus on issues of prejudice and migration, exploring the complex concepts of macro-hospitality, power relations, and migration as an eternal guest-hood. In my current series – Conversations (2025) – inspired by writings of Jacques Derrida and Franz Kafka and real migrant stories, I question concepts of belonging and home, foregrounding language as site of rapture and repair, and gesture as means of communication. Deeply autobiographical these works are designed to invite and provoke reflection, with their ultimate meanings grounded within the viewers’ own histories. I frequently explore the possible multiple readings and narratives of my work by situating them in dialogue with works of artists whose practice is different to my own but whose concepts or aesthetics might enrich and question my own work. My individual art practice sits alongside a community focused work. I frequently collaborate with the Migrant Voice, with whom I co-curated exhibitions such as ‘Putting Ourselves in the Picture’ (Kelvingrove Museum and Art Galleries) and ‘Outside In’ (Maryhill Borough Halls). I also contributed a short story to their publication ‘All Roads Lead to Glasgow’, and submitted illustrations, photography and writings for their exhibitions and zines. I am a founding member and Chair of Threading Stories Collective, a Glasgow-based creative group.
