Haselden

I am a basketry artist, specialising in coil basketry. I am drawn to simple materials and simple processes, which I then seek to elevate through an exploration of ideas. Initially my work focused on making baskets around found objects, with locally gathered materials. It has since evolved and now focuses on an exploration of the surface of my baskets, using a variety of materials and techniques to create texture and pattern. I am currently exploring ideas for visual storytelling, through a combination of quilting, embroidery and basketry practices. My work has always been influenced by the restfulness of time spent in nature, either the beautiful coast and woodland around me, or my own garden. This is sometimes evidenced by the materials that I have chosen, and at other times by the textures, patterns and colours used. I am committed to a sustainable arts practice, using sustainable, locally produced materials, materials from the local scrapstore, or repurposing materials from charity shops and carboot sales. I also teach creative basketry, through online courses, sharing my skills, ideas and enthusiasm with others.
