Painting, for me, is not about describing the landscape—it’s about distilling the feeling of being in it. Rooted in the shifting light and weather of Scotland’s west coast, my work begins with observation and gradually dissolves into abstraction, exploring the quiet spaces where sky meets sea and memory brushes against the present. Working with gouache, pastel, pencil and water, I build layers, often removing them again, allowing traces of what came before to remain visible. Like the coastline itself, each painting is shaped as much by what has been taken away as by what remains. My dog is always nearby, watching. There’s a shared quiet in our rhythm. Walking, pausing, observing, and returning to the studio are all part of the same process. For me, the act of noticing is as important as the act of painting. They are inseparable.

Previous Experience

Gerrie O’Neill Visual Artist and Educator based in Inverclyde on Scotland’s west coast. Alongside a career in education and creative leadership, she has developed an evolving painting and drawing practice inspired by the everyday beauty, changing weather and atmosphere of the Clyde coast. Through observation, sketchbook practice and studio work, she creates contemporary landscape paintings that celebrate place, light and the experience of looking. As founder and facilitator of Learning at The Limes, she combines her studio practice with artist-led creative learning, creating opportunities for others to engage with drawing, painting and creative exploration.
