Emma

Sutherland

Location: Edinbrugh

Materials: Acrylic, Assemblage, Oil, Stitched
Emma Sutherland resides and works in Edinburgh, Scotland. Over the last two decades, she has been honing her artistic style. Predominantly a painter, she first exhibited in 2012. Since then, she has explored several mediums and now considers herself a multidisciplinary artist working in painting, collage and ceramics. An overall theme has emerged during this time, exploring thresholds and in-betweens, with a focus on rituals and sacred space through a personal lens. Ongoing series include: Life Rituals, A Meditation on Sacred Space, and Columns, Caves and Curtains. She creates tactile works using bold, loose, unrestrained mark-making, contrasted with calmness. Her paintings are typically on raw canvas, using acrylic, oil and pigment, and her ceramics are made with textured clay layered with slip and glazes. Her recent notable exhibitions are the 2025 Visual Arts Scotland Biennial, at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, UK and the 2024 Then and Now: 100 Years of Visual Arts Scotland’ at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, UK. Internationally, she exhibited in the 2021 ‘Eve Au Jardin De Pommes’ with Fatale Art and Verger Creatif in Montreal, Canada, and in 2019 ‘Nous Sommes Fatale’ with Fatale Art Gallery at Le Livart, Montreal, Canada. Her artwork is in various private and international collections.
