I’m Claire, a graduating artist from The Glasgow School of Art this year. I am developing my practice into expanded painting using spatial and material experimentation. My interests centre around transparency and industrial, unstable environments. My work maps technological paranoia, my approach is influenced by systems and post-digital methods, using expanded painting as a way of revealing underlying structures of control. My interest in media, network and surveillance theory, led me to examine the tension between machine-centric technological systems and cultural anxiety. I construct environments to convey this tension. Maps, architecture, and systems influence my compositions, making landscapes that are not intended for human inhabitation. My work’s destabilise conventional perspective by using fragmentation, layering, and spatial disorientation. Through material mixing large scale paintings with glass, reflective and industrial materials, I create a conflict in visibility, obscuring as much as revealing images. This dynamic reflects the dynamics of surveillance and data extraction described by Zuboff. My process is a combination of digital construction using the distortion of photographic references, and intuitive painting. Using these together allows me to produce a controlled, system-like aesthetic in which painterly marks appear as disruptions or malfunctions. Through this, the work acts as a landscape in which control systems structure the land but are never fully accessible, reinforcing a sense of instability and technological paranoia. Ultimately, the work constructs environments that cannot be fully understood, only navigated
