Brett

De Vos

Brett de Vos is a Scottish-based multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker working across painting, photography, moving image, writing and an ongoing practice of visual field notes. His work begins with a desire to better understand himself, the world around him, and the nature of perception, consciousness and reality. His background in film direction and cinematography informs a sensitivity to framing, light, time and narrative across the practice. Making functions as a form of inquiry: a way of approaching questions that resist language or direct explanation. Through close observation, material experimentation and sustained attention, he grounds emotional, spiritual and metaphysical concerns in tangible images and processes. Moving between lens-based and handmade forms allows each medium to inform the others, opening up different ways of noticing, recording and interpreting experience. Process is central to his practice. Rather than seeking fixed answers or predetermined outcomes, he is interested in what emerges through curiosity, repetition and the act of making itself. Although the work often begins in personal experience, it aims to create space for viewers to pause, question familiar assumptions and consider new ways of seeing and relating—to themselves, to one another and to the world around them.
