My work explores the sense of place through landscape and memory. The remote environment I come from in the far north coast of Scotland means that I have always been fascinated by the hinterlands and quiet edges of places – a bleak remoteness which can be both beautiful and melancholic. I tend to work instinctively and I enjoy the labour of traditional hand tool craft methods – forming a dialogue with a range of materials through the exploration of their innate qualities and discovering their inherent possibilities. Each piece is an exploration of composing elements at the intersection of landscape and memory, and reflects the often bleak and fragile nature of the environment I come from. For over 20 years since graduating, I have sustained an ongoing international self-employed creative practice based in Scotland, securing contracts UK-wide and exhibiting globally. This has involved executing international research, lecturing, residency, and exhibition work, which required travel to countries including Norway, Finland, Iceland, Japan, Iran, Hong Kong, and Canada. As an experienced researcher with a strong commitment to the field of craft, my core interest is in the influence of landscape and the use of natural materials, underpinned by a broad knowledge of fabrication and materials investigation. I have devised and facilitated diverse taught programmes, ranging from workshops for children and technique-based adult evening classes to one-to-one mentoring, conceptually themed master classes, and Higher Education undergraduate assessment.
