Barry Allan Scott is a Perthshire-based artist and tutor working from a studio beside the River Earn. His practice centres on drawing and painting, moving between portraiture, Scottish landscape and imaginative figurative work. He works across oil, acrylic, watercolour, pastel, coloured pencil and ink, choosing materials according to each subject. Scott graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee, in 2001. He later completed the three-year Master of Fine Arts programme at the University of Maryland, where he taught drawing and introductory design. His time in the United States included residencies at Vermont Studio Center and Atlantic Center for the Arts, and opportunities to work alongside artists including Kerry James Marshall, John Torreano and Arnold Mesches. He was also a sculpture assistant to Joan Danziger. His awards include the Mitchell Prize at Duncan of Jordanstone and the David Driskell Award for excellence in teaching and studio practice at Maryland. Since returning to Perthshire in 2007, Scott has combined his studio practice with portrait commissions, professional picture framing and art education. He teaches regular classes and workshops from his River Earn studio and for art groups across Perthshire. Recent work reflects an interest in people, place and memory. His portraits aim for psychological presence without losing the particularity of the sitter, while his landscape and wildlife work grows from close observation of Scotland’s changing light, weather and natural environment. Across these strands, drawing remains the foundation of his practice.
