Anna

Hutton

Disciplines: Drawing

Location: East Walton, King's Lynn

Anna Hutton (born in Edinburgh in 1972) lives and works in an area of rewilding in West Norfolk. She makes drawings and prints that move between representation and abstraction and are informed by her time alone outdoors. She works in series, repeatedly revisiting the same views within this uninhabited place, tracing patterns of transience within herself and in nature. The Between series of charcoal drawings recalls her presence within scrubland when weather and light make the surroundings indefinite. A sense of emergence and of a landscape shifting is carried in her choice and manipulation of material. She builds up layers of charcoal, passing over and over the paper surface adding, removing and smudging until a balance is found between the ground of the paper and her pigment. In recent drawings she uses charcoal that she made from wood harvested from this place – hawthorn in the Between drawings and ash in the Fallen Ash series which are made on thin translucent Japanese paper. The fragility of her drawings with their dusty pigment clinging only loosely to the paper connects with the vulnerability of her subjects in an increasingly unstable natural world and she questions also her own resilience.
