Dr Allison Macleod is a Scottish designer and maker specialising in conceptual art jewellery. Since founding her company, Phorme, in 2020, she has focused on creating individual pieces that explore materiality, meaning and sustainability. Sustainability sits at the core of her practice, informing both her design processes and choice of materials. Based in Broughty Ferry, Scotland, Allison is a member of Applied Arts Scotland’s Research Group, contributing to shared research into sustainable approaches that can be adopted by other creative practitioners. She graduated in 2019 from the University of Dundee with a BDes (Hons) in Jewellery & Metal Design. Her work has received several awards, including the Anne Clare Grahame Award for Excellence in Design & Craftsmanship and the College Award ACJ (both 2019), HM ISCB Art in Science, Basel (2019), and a Silver Award for Conceptual Jewellery Design at the Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council Awards, London (2022). Before retraining as a designer, Allison qualified in medicine at the University of London in 1982 and spent 30 years practising as a medical doctor.
