Ally Mackellar is a textile artist based in Argyll, Scotland, creating felted landscapes inspired by the west coast, Highlands, lochs, rivers and changing weather of the Scottish landscape. Working with wool and natural fibres, Ally uses traditional wet-felting and needle-felting techniques to build layered, tactile compositions that sit between image and material object. Her work explores landscape not simply as a view, but as an atmospheric and physical experience — shaped by light, water, movement, memory and time. Texture is central to Ally’s practice. Fibres are layered, blended and worked by hand to create depth, surface and movement, allowing hills, skies, water and woodland to emerge through colour and material. Her pieces often respond to places encountered through walking, travel and close observation, translating the feeling of being in the landscape into a richly textured textile form. Ally’s work is exhibited through carefully selected galleries and exhibitions across Scotland.
