McCarthy

Aaron McCarthy is an artist based in Angus, Scotland. He uses lens based media, sculpture, installation and sound to critically explore ideas of place, heritage and language. Currently studying towards a practice based PHD; an interdisciplinary research project exploring Material Transitions across Time on the Orkney Archipelago (RGU, Grays School of Art, Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and James Hutton Institute).

Previous Experience

Aaron is a recipient of multiple awards and grants including the VACMA scheme (Angus 2024, 23 Glasgow mentorship 2020, Glasgow 2018, Dundee 2015) and the Hotel Generation Artist Development Programme with Arebyte Gallery, London (2018) and Hope Scott Trust (2018, 2015). Aaron has completed residencies with Linkshouse Orkney (2025), Arbroath Scriptorium (2024), Studio Pavilion, Glasgow (2021) Timespan, Helmsdale (2018), Glasgow Sculpture Studios Project Residency (2018), Many Studios Graduate Residency programme, Glasgow (2017) and Emerging Digital Artist in Residence, OVADA, Oxford (2017). Selected solo exhibitions include Residual Frames, Glasgow Project Room (2018) and You Belong in Content at Many Studios (2017) and New Pyre, CCA Glasgow, Intermedia Gallery (2016). Recently participated in the Scotland + Venice exhibition A Fragile Correspondence at the International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia 2023 (V&A Dundee 2024). He has also worked in curatorial and event based roles within organisations such as Hospitalfield Arts, Timespan.
