Monica Findlay is a Glasgow-based silversmith making tactile jewellery and objects inspired by a curiosity for the material presence of the past.
The maker uses tactile techniques to manipulate precious and non-precious metals, placing emphasis on the interrelation between memory and object. Etched textures and delicate wirework replicate and emulate inscribed memories, while embossed traces convey the absence of passing objects that once were in contact with the surface. Bringing together storytelling and archaeology, her body of work explores tangible remains, their surface qualities as important signifiers or touchstones of memories, both ancient and modern.
Monica's objective as a maker is to extend her curiosity to the viewer and create artefacts that seem distant yet familiar, causing observers to experience a sense of nostalgia upon interaction.
