Lauren McLaughlin is a multidisciplinary artist, curator and activist based in Edinburgh. Her practice aims to amplify issues of inequality and social justice with a particular emphasis on the underrepresented narratives of women and mothers. Working in collage, neon, sculpture and socially engaged practice, her work is sometimes considered confrontational or challenging, as she often deals with issues or experiences which are still largely understood to be taboo. Lauren graduated from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art London in 2012 with BA (Hons) Fine Art, and MA in Applied Arts and Social Practice from Queen Margaret University in 2021. Her work has been exhibited throughout the UK and Europe and has work as part of permanent public collections including The Birth Rights Collection at King’s College London after winning their 2018 award for new work. Lauren's work was shortlisted for the John Byrne Award in 2021 and has work featured in several publications over the past few years including Milked Mag, Maternal Art Magazine, Cults of Life Zine and Wordpower: Launguage as Medium. Lauren is also the founder and director of Spilt Milk Gallery CIC; a social enterprise whose mission is to promote the work of artists who identify as mothers and empower mothers in our wider community through artist-led activity.
