Creating a visual language of the vernacular of the North East of Scotland. Researching the different factors of Culture and questioning its interaction with modern day Scotland. Physical interaction with materials, I enjoy creating work that means I actively participate with the material. This year has seen me push the capabilities of materials, and myself. Creating 1000 slip cast ceramic mussels with moulds made from real mussels, a physically demanding process, but thoroughly rewarding to see my midden grow.
I research the material I want to work with, I look for alternative techniques and ways of producing interesting results. With smoke firing, saggar firing, soft ground etching being just some of these methods where I push the material and incorporate nature into it. I bring nature into my processes as much as is possible, using found objects or materials, I believe this gives the work a relatable element.
Developing my work into the wilder, wider world and engaging with local practitioners, enthusiast and anyone else who wants to open a dialogue about Culture based arts.
