My latest body of work explores rituals of memory focused around the paper-making town of Penicuik, a landscape which is deeply rooted in my personal history. Through the development of physical artefacts and Memory Vessels, I consider how a deeper connection with the landscape can ground our sense of place within the wider world.
Paper, clay, copper, eggshell, and colour pigment are all earth-bound materials with their own narratives and tied to my experience of this special landscape. Through earth, water, air, and fire, the materials share their life cycle, bearing the scars of interaction, celebrating imperfection, and honouring the passing of time.
Working directly with the materials at the bench, compositions evolve intuitively, allowing discovery as components naturally come to sit side by side. The work distills down a psychological shift from engaging the wider environment to intimate forms and arrangements informed by place. The effect of this shift is a series of pieces that connect us through the body to a deeper understanding of all that has come before and, through my ongoing studio practice, to all that is still to come.
