Jo Fleming Smith, from the North East coast of England, is a multidisciplinary artist and educator currently based in Derbyshire.
She graduated with BA (Hons) Fine Art from Sheffield Hallam University, MA (Hons) Contemporary Art Practice from Edinburgh College of Art and attended Turps Correspondence Course 22-24. She is part of Turps alumni and collective, Split.
She has taken part in international residencies and exhibitions in solo and group shows, including the award winning Hidden Door Festival in Edinburgh 2023 and a solo show at Summer Hall, Edinburgh. Her work is held in private collections.
Gender, identity and environment are ongoing themes in her work. Her practice investigates her interconnectedness to the landscape where she meditatively explores her state of being within and as part of this ecology.
Fleming Smith works primarily in painting and installation utilising light, space and form to explore experiences of interconnectedness and community.
Her work follows the fields of minimal and gestural abstraction and is heavily influenced by the light and space movement. She works with spontaneity and chance, exploring colour and form through layering, staining, and repetitive mark making. The result is a material process based practice contemplating place, time and experience.
Her most recent work explores expanded painting and develops intuitively in response to the environment, navigating painting as movement, in dialogue with material, space and time. This new body of work considers themes of connection, absence, presence, transformation and potential.
