Using found/personal images as an initial point of reference, I begin to invent a set of false memories to form an idealised reality around an event. These are then translated into paintings that present an alternative pictorial universe to one originally experienced in the image. This simulated reality is expanded through a subsequent process of fictive writing and the adoption of fictional self portraits/personas that function as dramatised spokespersons/narrators for the created world.
The work aims to comment on notions of Jekyll/Hydeism in Scottish identity, ‘Caledonian Antisyzygy’ and in a wider sense, my practice attempts to interpret and translate literary forms and theories into atypical cross-disciplinary outcomes i.e. drawing, painting, music, sound, performance, film, sculpture.
