Dr Chris Dooks, b.1971, is Honorary Research Fellow at Edinburgh University Centre for Cross-Relational Enquiry, specialising in multimedia arts. Additionally, he is a wellbeing researcher with a history of filmmaking and community art.
A film graduate from Edinburgh College of Art, in the 1990s Dooks directed personal work and tv arts documentaries and radio works for UK broadcasters such as BBC, ITV and internationally for PBS USA.
Due to ongoing disability, Chris shifted career in the 2000s, a series of funded artist residencies occurred, exploring sonic art (e.g. STEIM Amsterdam) and socially-engaged practice. A doctorate between 2009-2015 developed Dooks’ practical philosophical work ‘Idioholism’ - creating ‘artist-as-healer’ models.
"I am an aesthetically motivated artist with a very broad range of experience and skills which often makes me difficult to pin down! But thematically I am constant in my approach of sensory and sensual photography and sound works which come from my documentary training - which aim to offset obstacles and hinderance to art practice. I am a doctor of wellbeing and sound art from The University of The West of Scotland (2015) and I am also a carer of a disabled child - such experience can bring my tacit knowledge to clients and funders."
