My latest work is inspired by a collection of family papers: a scrap book dating from 1891 to 1898 containing letters and other papers.

Small moments in time are recorded in these letters, and news shared. Trying to read the letters without the background stories is both intriguing and puzzling.

Details from the past are fleeting and easily lost.

My work explores the fragility of information from the past and loss of meaning over time.

I have broken down the words and used the fragments to suggest the trunks of trees. These have an age and fragility about them, they are like dead trunks that are still standing despite many years. As I have stitched them I have echoed the marks of the hand writing in places and obscured the words yet further in others. Reducing the words to just marks has been a feature of this work, although some fragments can still be read.

The trees have developed personality as I have worked with different bark patterns, broken limbs and roots.

I like the idea of family trees and also the circularity of the paper letters, made from trees originally and now taking that shape again.
