Tamaki

Hodgson

Tamaki Kawaguchi is a Japan-born, Edinburgh-based painter whose practice moves between landscape, memory and constructed imagery. Drawing on her experience across Japan and Europe, she approaches painting as a space where observation is disrupted and reconfigured through intuition. Her recent work is informed by the Scottish landscape, not as direct representation but as a starting point for transformation. Forms shift between still life and landscape, and familiar elements are rearranged into ambiguous, often playful compositions. Colour plays a central role, used not descriptively but to create atmosphere, tension and emotional distance. Kawaguchi’s process is intuitive and responsive. She works through layering, allowing images to emerge, dissolve and reappear, resisting fixed meaning. This approach reflects an ongoing interest in perception — how we construct what we see, and how memory and imagination interfere with that process. Alongside painting, she has developed performance-based work in natural environments, extending her exploration of place beyond the studio. Her practice is grounded in observation but ultimately seeks to move beyond it, creating a space where the real and the imagined coexist.
