Terox ( Taye )

Benjamin

I’m Terox I’m a contemporary graffiti artist from Newcastle. I’m the youngest artist to have work in the Baltic centre for contemporary art when I was 10 and the Royal Scottish Academy ( RSW) earlier this year.my chosen medium is spray paint & acrylic. I also use found materials to craft , with an emphasis on process & instability. I enjoy the traces of old suggesting themselves in uncertain fragments. I alternate between lively contemporary spray compositions to more structured portrait pieces. I draw inspiration from my personal surroundings, smell sight ,taste ,touch & interpret these through my love of hip hop culture. I utilise the colour ways of old school train carts . I began developing my practice at an early age through sketching colour and pattern before i could cohesively draw. Being colour blind continues to shape how I interpret & utilise colour within my work. I enjoy that what I see isn’t always what’s interpreted. My portrait pieces however are deeply personal restrained & toned down. I paint family members. I’m from a mixed heritage background. My Grandparents were part of the Windrush generation. I paint from stories filtered through. An embrace,a look , a quip . Interpreting images that resonate. Honouring a generation who continue to shape modern Britain. I’ve found meaning in shared memories making them almost like a tangible archive.
