Magrel

I am an abstract painter. My practice is devoted to colour – with a particular fascination for the Middle Ages, when colour in art was symbolic, codified, and metaphysical. My chosen medium for this exploration is collage, which I treat as a painting technique. While my work references the tradition of oil painting, I replace pigments with precisely cut fragments of printed colour. Each small, uniform fragment, becomes a brushstroke, constructing surfaces of rhythm and symbolic meaning. Through my work, I explore colour both as subject matter and as inner experience – personal, symbolic and emotional. I am currently developing a cycle of works devoted to the study of colour as a mental and metaphysical phenomenon.
