Gayle
Baird
Gayle Baird is a self-taught visual artist, writer and filmmaker based in Edinburgh. Working in ink, acrylic and oil paint, her symbolic, narrative images explore mental illness, healing, inner transformation and spiritual connection with the natural world. She studied Drama at the University of Exeter, completed an MA in Film Directing at Edinburgh College of Art and later studied Advanced Film Practice at Edinburgh Napier University. Her visual practice is informed by her experience of anorexia, bulimia, psychosis and schizophrenia, alongside her engagement with shamanism and meditation. Her autobiographical novel, Dancing with Crows, was published by Elyssar Press in 2023. Her forthcoming book, The Other Side, explores her search for lasting peace while living with severe mental illness. In 2026, after making art throughout her life, she began pursuing her visual practice professionally.
