Huizhong

Xue

Huizhong Xue is an Edinburgh-based artist and practice-based PhD researcher working across Ball-Jointed Dolls (BJDs), craft objects, installation, picture books and digital media. Her practice explores the BJD as a narrative body: a handmade, articulated and modifiable figure through which stories, memories and lived experiences can take material form. Drawing on her background in doll-making and picture-book creation, Xue develops surreal worlds where bodies, objects, places and environments are closely connected. Her work often uses making, alteration, posing and photography to explore how a doll can carry narrative through its structure, surface and movement. Xue also works with digital and AI-assisted forms of co-creation, considering how handcrafted objects can be extended through computational tools. She holds a BA in Information Design and Picture Book Creation from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, and an MA in Illustration from the University of Edinburgh.
