My practice investigates ecological processes and botanic interconnectedness through material agency. I create conditions in the studio – such as ‘watering’ paintings with inks and earth pigments on canvas – then observe as they evolve through cycles of desiccation and reworking. This method mirrors natural systems: the way moss cultivates its boundary layer, or an insect sheds its exoskeleton through ecdysis. The studio functions as the ecosystem for this research. Here, works grow in relation to one another, resembling non-linear, rhizomatic networks; fabrics and papers are layered, then peeled back to reveal topographical impressions beneath. This reveals the painting as a record of process and time. Ultimately, my work highlights a collaborative relationship between myself, the materials and the environment. I employ sustainable and repurposed materials – reclaimed paint, charcoal, inks – to explore a collaborative relationship between intention and chance. Each piece exists in a state of temporary pause, embodying the resilience and continual transformation inherent to the natural world.
