Shoji

Funakawa

Shoji Funakawa is an artist and researcher currently based in Dundee, working across installation, sound, light, moving image, text, performance and self-built observation devices. He approaches weather not as a subject to represent, but as a condition through which bodies, environments, memory and language continually alter one another. His practice brings sensory observation into contact with meteorological data, oral knowledge, found materials and site-specific histories. Since January 2026, as an Overseas Research Fellow of the Pola Art Foundation, he has travelled across Scotland in a van fitted with an antenna, receiving weather-satellite signals while researching weather lore, coastal ecologies, seaweed and place-specific vocabularies. Recent works include Weather Beads (2026), made at Hospitalfield from seaweed bioplastic, meteorological data and fishermen’s memories; Mashita Wind (2024); and AWHOB: A Weather Haecceity Observation Bureau (2024). His installations create temporary observatories in which technological and embodied forms of attention meet, allowing a place to be encountered through its particular winds, colours, sounds, materials and stories.
