Blakey

My work explores colour, movement and the ever-changing beauty of the natural world. Working primarily with soft pastels, I create atmospheric, expressive pieces inspired by the sea, sky, light and the fleeting moments found in nature. I am drawn to the way colour can evoke a feeling before a subject is even recognised, and I use layered marks, blending and loose, gestural strokes to capture that sense of movement and atmosphere. My work sits somewhere between abstraction and representation. Rather than trying to reproduce a scene exactly, I am interested in how a place or moment feels — the energy of a breaking wave, the softness of changing light, or the calm that comes from looking out towards an open horizon. It’s all about the emotional connection for me. Colour is central to my practice. I particularly enjoy working with blues, turquoises, pinks, lilacs and softer tones, allowing colours to merge and contrast to create depth and emotion. I want my paintings to feel uplifting, immersive and open to interpretation — inviting the viewer to pause, look closely and perhaps find their own memory or feeling within the image.
